Choose Action

Family of four are having fun together in the car.

After a talk to a Year 12 group, a young woman asked me… what matters more, direction or taking action?

“Am I supposed to know where I’m going and then start walking? That would make sense wouldn’t it? Or am I supposed to just start walking even if it’s the wrong way?”

What would you say?

I confess. My default is towards action. We can learn from action. We can make course corrections and adjustments with action.

But, as I tell my corporate audiences, ‘you can’t steer a parked car’.

This week, something is going to stop you in your tracks. A kid who won’t talk to you. A consequence that isn’t working. A relationship that feels stuck. You won’t know the right answer. You might not even know the right question.

You can contemplate. You can plan. You can think about the best way to optimise your results in this bind that has you stuck.

Or you can just move towards a solution.

We just have to have an attitude of learning. Because… you can’t steer a parked car. But a moving car? Even one pointed slightly the wrong way? That, you can work with.

Dealing with challenges in your parenting or relationships? Start moving. The direction will come.
